MN-02 : Meet David Gerson – Kline’s GOP Challenger

It was not a surprise when Mike Obermueller formally filed to represent the Second District as the Democrat nominee, but David Gerson’s filing may have startled a few people … until you think about the current incumbent, John Kline.

There have been rumblings … when the Debt Ceiling was being debated, but most recently when Chairman Kline was recently booed at a CD2 event while “there was a good amount of people sitting down out of disapproval of some of his voting record.”

David Gerson announced his candidacy with an insightful assessment :

We must be honest about our own party and its leaders.

I want to expose the last “elephant”-in -the-room in the Republican party. That the Republican Bush administration and the current Republican controlled U.S. House of Representatives was and is complicit in enacting reckless fiscal policies which have mortgaged our future, disintegrated the middle class, promoted unnecessary wars and increased the size and power of the federal government.
John Kline has been complicit in causing these problems with his blind devotion to voting with house Republican leadership. John Kline has had his chance to lead but has proven that he is a follower of Washington D.C. interests at the expense of the average person in his district and Minnesota. His voting record is unacceptable especially his vote for T.A.R.P., the Troubled Asset Relief Program, to bail out wealthy bankers from their poor decisions at the expense average citizen. He also voted for multiple failed stimulus bills such as Cash For Clunkers that further indebted this country and promoted certain businesses over the health and welfare of the people. This penchant for crony Capitalism in Washington D.C. is stealing opportunity from the common man. John Kline voted for $2.4 trillion of increases to the debt ceiling. He has voted for measures to cede our personal civil rights to the federal government including measures to limit our free speech, HR 347, and worse – our presumption of innocence by voting to allow the military arrest and indefinite detention of U.S. citizens on U.S. soil without a trial in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012.

My campaign goal is to provide an opportunity for the people in the 2nd Congressional District to hold John Kline accountable for his transgressions through my election to congress and to send a message to all Republican statists beholden to the establishment in Washington D.C. that there will be consequences for betraying our core principles.

Considering that John Kline has presented a lot of questions that Mr. Gerson has not addressed … such as, Mr. Kline having the highest Congressional Office spending of the Minnesota delegation ( The actual dollars spent for last year were : $1,319,468.42 – John Kline (R-MN-02) spending 91.6% of his budget versus the lowest Member, $1,198.273.03 – Betty McCollum (D-MN-04) spending 84.0% of her budget.)
… his support for increasing the Import-Export Bank borrowing
… his support for an increasing Defense budget over Pentagon requested amounts
… his support for the Ryan Budget which includes less cutting of via The Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012 than the Obama budget ( Obama at $32 billion, Ryan at $30 billion) but Environmental Working Group senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources, Craig Cox complains that “what’s being proposed is more like what most people would consider a security blanket. A real reform bill would have ended direct payments, rejected new farm entitlements and made important reforms to crop insurance subsidies that are slated to cost $90 billion over the next 10 years.” This is not a surprise considering his support for Corporate Ag Subsidies.
… and so many more.

Yep, the Second District is waking up … the election will not be a cakewalk this year for Chairman Kline.
