On Memorial Day, Don’t Forget to Remember the Military Members who have Died from COVID

Don’t be surprised if our “war-time President” fails to acknowledge the impact that the coronavirus has had on our military. While some may think that this is an “old people” problem that has primarily hit people with weakened immune system, may not realize that our active military is not immune.

The Defense Department’s COVID-19 death toll jumped more than 18 percent this week, as five deaths brought the overall numbers to 32, according to data released Friday. In fact, Friday’s report indicated that 5,959 troops have been diagnosed with the virus … while the Navy has made some headlines from the USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Kidd, the Army reports 1,295 cases, the Marine Corps have 517 cases, and the Air Force at 469.

Yes, the active military is a big number (at roughly 1.3 million), the 32 deaths out of well over 90,000 may seem small, yet let’s remember that New Zealand has 5 million people with just 1,503 cases and 21 deaths.

This Memorial Day will be like no other … and hopefully, next year’s remembrance will be lead by some new voices in Congress … and the good news is that there are quite a few accomplished military veterans for voters to consider.
